Overview
Welcome to the Mai Chau Bike Ride 3 Days, a journey crafted for those who believe that the best way to see the world is from the seat of a bicycle. Located just 150 kilometers from the bustling streets of Hanoi, Mai Chau is a world apart—a serene valley cradled by towering limestone mountains and carpeted with vibrant green rice paddies. This three-day cycling odyssey is not just a tour; it is an invitation to slow down, breathe the fresh mountain air, and connect with a way of life that has remained harmonious with nature for centuries.
Our journey begins with a scenic drive through the rugged highlands of Hoa Binh, leading us to the breathtaking Thung Khe Pass. From here, the Mai Chau valley unfolds like a masterpiece of nature, dotted with the brown roofs of traditional stilt houses belonging to the White Thai ethnic group. Unlike shorter trips, this three-day itinerary allows us to push deeper into the valley, beyond the well-trodden paths of Lac and Pom Coong villages. We will pedal toward the remote hamlets of Xam Khoe and Nhat, where the rhythm of life is dictated by the seasons and the hospitality of the locals is as warm as the mountain sun.
Imagine pedaling along narrow village lanes where children greet you with enthusiastic smiles, crossing bamboo bridges, and stopping to watch local artisans at their looms creating intricate textiles. Each evening, you will find sanctuary in an authentic stilt house, enjoying "farm-to-table" meals prepared with organic ingredients from the surrounding fields. From the misty sunrises over the peaks to the vibrant traditional dances under the starlight, every moment of this tour is designed to provide a deep, soulful immersion into the rural heart of Northern Vietnam. Whether you are an experienced cyclist or a casual rider, the flat valley floor and rolling hills of Mai Chau offer the perfect terrain for a memorable adventure.

The Real Vietnam Mai Chau is in Hoa Binh Province, about 135 km from Hanoi. It is home to two of Vietnam's many ethnic minorities, the White Tai and Black Tai, who settled in the area about 400 years ago. You can imagine the surprise of many of the people I met when I talked back to them in Thai, which is their first language. Mai Chau is a wide valley almost totally boxed in by high rain forest covered mountains. The valley floor is very fertile, and produces up to three crops a year of rice and vegetables. It is a place for quiet reflection, away from the hustle and bustle of Hanoi. We borrowed bicycles from our homestay and pedalled around rice fields, through small villages with their teak wood traditional houses on stilts, and alongside small rivers and streams flowing through the valley. At one stage my travelling companion came off his bike and ended up knee deep in rice padi mud - but he took it in good spirit.
