Overview
THE GRAND MOUNTAIN LOOP OF NORTHWEST VIETNAM
Embark on the ultimate test of endurance and spirit with our 6-day Northwest Vietnam Bicycle Trip. This is the "Grand Loop" that every serious cyclist dreams of—a journey that traverses the most formidable mountain ranges in Indochina. We take you far beyond the standard tourist trails, deep into the rugged soul of the Northwest, where the road is an endless ribbon of challenges and triumphs.
Your odyssey begins with a journey to Son La, a region steeped in history and surrounded by towering peaks. From here, the real test begins as you tackle the legendary Pha Din Pass, one of the "Four Great Passes" of Vietnam, known as the place where "Earth meets Heaven." You will navigate the deep river canyons leading to Lai Chau, cycle through the vibrant Tam Duong tea hills, and finally conquer the crown jewel of Vietnamese mountain passes: O Quy Ho.
This tour is a masterclass in cultural immersion and physical grit. You will share the road with colorful Thai, H’mong, and Lu ethnic minorities, witness the raw beauty of the Nam Na River, and find yourself standing amidst the clouds of Sapa. With Golden Cycling Tours, every detail is handled—from professional-grade mountain bikes to dedicated support vehicles—allowing you to focus entirely on the rhythm of your breath and the majesty of the mountains. This is not just a cycling tour; it is a transformational experience in the most beautiful highlands on earth.

Tour Plan
Your adventure begins at 8:00 AM as the Golden Cycling Tours team greets you for a scenic transfer toward the Northwest. As we leave the urban sprawl of Hanoi, the landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation. We climb onto a higher plateau, where the air turns crisp and the roads begin to wind through a sea of coffee and tea plantations.
In the late afternoon, we arrive in Son La, a town with a deep and somber history. We visit the Son La Prison, a former French penal colony where revolutionaries were once held. Today, it stands as a museum of resilience, famously marked by a lone peach tree planted by an inmate in the 1940s—the only thing to survive American air raids. After soaking in the history, we check into our hotel to prepare for the first day of riding.

-
Cycling Distance: Warm-up stretches (Optional based on arrival)
-
