Overview

Are you ready to venture off the beaten path and journey to the very birthplace of the Khmer Empire? While millions of travelers rush to the famous temples of Angkor Wat, a select few choose to head east—where the historic grand story of Cambodia truly began. Welcome to the Cycling East Corner of Siem Reap Roluos Group & Countryside tour—a premium, high-sensory one-day mountain biking expedition designed for active explorers, history enthusiasts, and cultural seekers who want to feel the raw, beating heart of rural Cambodia.

Over an epic, action-packed day, you will travel back in time to the 9th-century ancient capital of Hariharalaya, exploring the magnificent Roluos Group temples which pre-date Angkor Wat by over three centuries. This is not a passive window-seat sightseeing tour; it is a full-sensory physical pilgrimage. As your tires leave the paved roads, you will experience the thrilling sensation of riding along quiet, rustic red-clay backcountry lanes.

Your senses will instantly awaken to the vibrant sights and sounds of the pristine Eastern countryside: the sweet, comforting scent of woodsmoke and wild lemongrass rising from farming hamlets, the friendly choruses of "Hello!" shouted by local children running to their gates, the rhythmic mechanical click-slick of your high-end Shimano gears, and the warm breeze brushing your face as you glide past endless emerald-green rice paddies dotted with grazing water buffaloes.

From scaling the magnificent pyramid layers of Prasat Bakong to tasting freshly roasted bamboo sticky rice with local families, this tour perfectly bridges ancient royal legacy and authentic local life. Backed by top-tier mountain bikes, a highly professional local guide, and a dedicated support vehicle, you will conquer the road less traveled in true active style!

  • Cycling Distance: Approx. 35 - 40 kilometers (21 - 25 miles)

  • Elevation Gain: Negligible (Completely flat countryside plains).

Your extraordinary day of active discovery begins in the fresh, cool morning air at 7:30 AM. Our comfortable, air-conditioned support minivan will pick you up directly from your hotel lobby and transfer you to our cycle shop. Here, you will meet your professional, licensed cycling guide. We perform a personalized, meticulous bike fitting—carefully adjusting your seat height and handlebar position to ensure maximum comfort—followed by a comprehensive safety briefing. Feel the premium grip of your handlebars, test the responsive click of your disk brakes, and set off on your journey toward the east.

Our ride starts along quiet backroads, leaving the city traffic behind as your tires touch the beautiful red-clay dirt paths of the countryside. You will instantly feel the shift in atmosphere. The air is wonderfully clean, scented with damp grass and wild morning blossoms. We cycle through peaceful rural communes, past traditional wooden houses raised high on towering stilts, and endless, shimmering green rice paddies.

By 9:30 AM, we arrive at our first temple stop, Prasat Lolei, located on what was once an ancient royal reservoir. Your expert local guide will share the fascinating history of this 9th-century island temple, pointing out the beautiful sandstone carvings and ancient Sanskrit inscriptions on the doorways. Next, we pedal a short distance to Prasat Preah Ko (The Sacred Bull), the first temple built in Hariharalaya. You will stand in awe before its six beautifully preserved brick and plaster towers, guarded by ancient stone bulls.

The grand finale of our historical journey is Prasat Bakong, the majestic temple mountain. As we approach, you will watch its soaring five-tiered sandstone pyramid rise dramatically over a spectacular, wide water-filled moat. We park our bikes under the shade of mature mango trees and explore the ruins on foot. Climb up the ancient stone steps to the top tier, where you will be rewarded with sweeping, panoramic views of the surrounding green forests and the glistening temple moat. Right next to the ruins, we visit an active, modern Buddhist pagoda, listening to the soft, meditative chanting of the resident monks.

At 11:30 AM, we mount our bikes and plunge deeper into the eastern countryside. We cycle along narrow agricultural trails where local farmers are working in organic vegetable gardens. We stop at a lively, authentic village market. This is a brilliant sensory explosion: the vibrant colors of tropical fruits, the aroma of local spices, and the rhythmic calls of local merchants trading fresh lake fish. It is a wonderful opportunity to see authentic Cambodian life completely untouched by commercial tourism.

At 12:30 PM, we stop at a charming local garden restaurant nestled in a peaceful village. We sit down to enjoy a healthy, delicious Cambodian lunch featuring fresh ingredients, lemongrass, sweet basil, and local spices. It is the perfect opportunity to relax, chat, and share stories of the incredible miles you have conquered.

Following lunch at 1:30 PM, we continue our loop along scenic canal paths. We stop at a small family workshop to see how local artisans hand-weave beautiful baskets and household items from natural fibers. We also stop at a small village stall to learn the art of making Kralan—sweet sticky rice mixed with black beans and coconut milk, packed into bamboo tubes and slow-roasted over open charcoal. You will get to taste this delicious, warm local treat fresh out of the bamboo, enjoying its rich, sweet flavor.

By 3:00 PM, we begin our return journey. You can choose to pedal the final leg back to Siem Reap town along peaceful, shade-dappled riverside paths, or hop into our comfortable, air-conditioned support vehicle for a smooth, relaxing transfer back to your hotel, arriving around 3:30 PM with tired legs, a joyful heart, and unforgettable memories of Cambodia’s eastern soul.
